The Copley soccer team was named the Girls Team of the Year on Thursday at the 2023 Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards, presented by Akron Children’s Hospital.
Copley won the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state championship.
Copley edged out the other two finalists, the Tallmadge softball team and the Woodridge track and field team. Tallmadge won the Division II state championship this year, its first state title since 1998. Woodridge won its first state championship, also in Division II.
Copley put together an unbeaten state championship season last fall under coach Wally Senk. Copley won the Division II state title to cap off a 22-0-1 season. It was the school’s first state championship in the sport. Copley did it by knocking off Waynesville, which had won 29 consecutive games and was the reigning state champion.
In all, more than 300 student-athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates athletes from the entire Akron and Canton areas. Twenty-nine athletes were honored as Players of the Year in their respective sports and 10 premier awards were handed out, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Boys Coach of the Year, Girls Coach of the Year, Courage Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Character Award and School Spirit Award.
The Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards program, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
