The 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards took place in New York City. Singer and talk show host Jennifer Hudson and country singer Orville Peck were honored.

Hudson received the Excellence in Media Award for championing allyship and promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues. Peck received the Vito Russo Award for elevating LGBTQ awareness in country music.

The ceremony, hosted by Ross Matthews at the Hilton Midtown, also saw the 17 remaining GLAAD Media Awards handed out after a portion was announced during the Los Angeles ceremony in March, hosted by Wayne Brady.

GLAAD’s Excellence in Media Award is given to allies who have made a significant difference in promoting the acceptance of LGBTQ people. Hudson joins recent previous winners, including Maren Morris, Judith Light, Ava DuVernay, Patti LaBelle, and Debra Messing.

The Vito Russo Award is named after GLAAD co-founder and ACT UP activist Vito Russo. Previous honorees include Wilson Cruz, Billy Porter, Anderson Cooper, Ricky Martin, Andy Cohen, and RuPaul.

GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said Peck “paved a new frontier for artists in a genre historically exclusionary of queer voices.”
