SUNY Fredonia Jazz Flextet Wins DownBeat Magazine Student Music Award – Chautauqua Today

SUNY Fredonia’s Jazz Studies program has been getting some national exposure in recent years, and that attention continued with another award for this year. The program’s Jazz Flextet recently won DownBeat Magazine’s outright Student Music Award in the Undergraduate Pop/Rock/Blues Group, which comes on the heels of awards the ensemble won each of the previous two years. Dr. Nick Weiser, who leads the Jazz Studies program, said on a recent edition of WDOE’s “Viewpoint” program that the recognition is a good sign for its future…

The awards the ensemble won in 2022 and 2023 were Outstanding Performance Awards in the undergraduate division of the Large Jazz Ensemble and Rock/Pop/Blues Group categories, respectively. Weiser says the award it won this year differs in that it was an outright award. The Jazz Studies program’s initial DownBeat accolade was in 2019, when the New Jazz Ensemble won Outstanding Performance honors in the undergraduate division of the Large Jazz Ensemble category.
