“And the BAFTA goes to…” Those words will be on many lips at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony in London on Sunday, hosted by Scottish actor David Tennant (Doctor Who, Inside Man) at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in the British capital.
Christopher Nolan’s biographical epic Oppenheimer is leading the pack of the 2024 BAFTA film nominees with 13 nominations, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ black-comedy science fantasy Poor Things with 11 noms. Martin Scorsese’s Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon received nine BAFTA nods, tying with Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest.
For the latter, German star Sandra Hüller is nominated for the latter in the best supporting actress category, while also being in the running for the best leading actress BAFTA for her role in Anatomy of a Fall. Bradley Cooper, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone also earned noms in more than one category.
Last year, Netflix’s German antiwar epic All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a haul of seven wins, including for best film, best director and best adapted screenplay.

English singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor will perform her 2001 smash hit “Murder on the Dancefloor,” featured in Emerald Fennell’s BAFTA-nominated film Saltburn, at the ceremony. And Hannah Waddingham will perform a musical number.
The 77th BAFTA film awards ceremony kicked off at 4:50 p.m. Sunday local time with an inspirational video package after announcers made several requests for audience members to take their seats.
BAFTA chair Sara Putt welcomed attendees by highlighting that BAFTA was working with a focus on “championing talent,” highlighting that “we constantly work to remove barriers.” She welcomed Prince William, the Prince of Wales, who serves as president of BAFTA and wished improving health to his wife Kate Middleton and King Charles III.
She also said the past year has been one of “immense challenge for our industry and the world.” But Putt added that audiences rediscovered cinemas “turbo-boosted by Barbenheimer.”
A video showing Tennant doing video calls with the likes of Michael Sheen, who asked him to dog-sit, Stanley Tucci, Tom Hiddleston and Judi Dench followed, in what was seen as a joke-filled new version of lockdown series Staged. The host then hit the stage, dressed in a kilt, with a dog and ended up dropping it in Sheen’s lap.
Tennant quipped that the stars in their nice outfits reminded him of characters from Saltburn, but he added that he hoped the ceremony wouldn’t end like the film.
