Controversy Surrounding Joe Lopez’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 43rd Tejano Music Awards – Tejano Nation

The 43rd annual Tejano Music Awards recently announced that Joe Lopez, a paroled, convicted sex offender and legendary Tejano singer, would receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. However, this decision has sparked controversy and drawn criticism from Tejano music fans and followers of Jimmy Gonzalez, the late co-founder of Grupo Mazz with Joe Lopez.

In a statement released via social media, the Forever Jimmy G Organization expressed their concerns and urged the Texas Talent Musicians Association, producers of the Tejano Music Awards, to retract the misinformation that was shared in a mass email to their followers and media. According to the organization, the email which contained a biography of Joe Lopez falsely credited Lopez as the recipient of Grammy awards earned by Jimmy Gonzalez Y Grupo Mazz during his solo career from 1999 to 2018. The statement argues that this allows Lopez to “impersonate Jimmy Gonzalez and his career accolades, including that in which it is stated that Joe Lopez is the founder of Grupo Mazz, therefore adopting Jimmy’s awards.”

The statement asserts that Jimmy Gonzalez successfully continued as Grupo Mazz after Lopez’s departure in 1997 to pursue a solo career as Joe Lopez y La Nueva Imagen Mazz. During this time, Jimmy Gonzalez earned Grammys and Latin Grammys for Best Tejano Album from 2001 to 2004, 2009, and 2014. It is also a matter of public record that Jimmy Gonzalez registered the name MAZZ in 2000 and continued to do so until his passing in 2018.

The organization highlights that Lopez was incarcerated from 2006 to 2017 and was not actively nor publicly earning awards during this period. They argue that allowing Lopez to adopt these awards is misleading and diminishes Jimmy Gonzalez’s contributions to Tejano music.

The statement calls on the fans of Jimmy Gonzalez, his family, friends, and fellow musical artists to protest these statements and false history with the TTMA. The organization believes that these fraudulent claims are an embarrassment to the TTMA and undermine its years of prestige as an authoritative entity in awarding Tejano musicians’ accomplishments.

In light of these concerns, the organization kindly requests a public statement from the TTMA correcting the false information shared. They emphasize that such action is necessary to protect and preserve Jimmy Gonzalez’s legacy.

At this time, the TTMA has not responded to the Forever Jimmy G Organization. Given their longevity and credibility in the Tejano industry, it seems the urgency for the TTMA’s response is critical at this point. The fans and industry are holding them accountable for distributing inaccurate information, which ultimately is a disservice to not only the industry but also the legacy of Jimmy Gonzalez, Joe Lopez, and Grupo Mazz.

Steve Mac, Pablo Bowman Navarro & More Win at 2023 ASCAP London Music Awards – Billboard

Steve Mac, Pablo Bowman Navarro and Aynzli Jones are the top winners at the ASCAP London Music Awards 2023, which shine a light on British songwriting and composing talent for their U.S. success. This year, the winners will be revealed on @ascap social media Tuesday (Sept. 26), starting at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Navarro takes home three awards including songwriter of the year and top Hot Dance/Electronic song. He shares the latter award with Sarah Baby Blanchard, Claudia Valentina and Lostboy for co-writing “The Motto” by Tiësto and Ava Max. The song reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Navarro also wins a Hot Dance/Electronic song award for “Numb” by Marshmello and Khalid, which reached No. 3 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Navarrro co-wrote the song with Richard Boardman, a fellow member of songwriting collective The Six. Navarro has gained a profile as a top hitmaker over the last few years with a catalogue that includes Anne-Marie and Marshmello’s global hit “Friends” as well as tracks for stars such as Bebe Rexha, Jonas Brothers and Alan Walker. His catalogue has accumulated 7 billion streams on Spotify.

Mac takes home both song of the year and top streaming song for Ed Sheeran’s smash, “Shivers.” The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for a full year. It also topped charts around the world, surpassing 1.35 billion streams on Spotify. Mac and Sheeran previously collaborated on 2017’s “Shape of You.” These two gongs represent Mac’s 19th and 20th ASCAP London Music Awards.

Jones wins his first ASCAP London Music Award with the Hot 100 song award for Doja Cat’s “Woman.” The song from Doja’s third studio album rose to No. 7 on the Hot 100 and, like “Shivers,” logged a full year on the chart. “Woman” also received a Grammy nod for record of the year, marking the third consecutive year Doja was nominated in that marquee category.

The trio of Barrie Cadogan, Virgil Howe and Lewis Wharton are awarded the top cable series award for the soundtrack to Better Call Saul, while Julian Gingell and Barry Stone win top network series again this year for their work on American Idol.

All the Spirit of Hope Winners in Billboard Latin Music Awards … – Billboard

In 1996, Gloria Estefan became the first-ever artist to receive the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award at the 3rd annual Billboard Latin Music Awards.

The Cuban-American singer, who that year nabbed three awards — including Latin dance single of the year for “Abriendo Puertas” — was also recognized for her philanthropic and humanitarian contributions beyond her musical work.

Since its inception 27 years ago in honor of the late Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, the Billboard Spirit of Hope Award has been awarded to 22 artists, including two-time honorees Estefan (1996, 2011) and Maná (2000, 2013). No award was given out in 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021.

This year, the special award will be presented to Colombian superstar Karol G. The “Provenza” singer’s impact extends beyond music. In 2022, Karol G founded the Con Cora Foundation, which aims to support the economic, social, psychological and artistic development of underprivileged women. “I am grateful for this special recognition,” Karol, a 13-time finalist at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards, said in a statement. “My commitment with Con Cora Foundation is a fundamental part of my life and I am proud to be able to help the women who need it most.”

Taylor Swift dominates 2023 MTV Video Music Awards – CBS News

Taylor Swift took home the top prize at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards for her “Anti-Hero” music video on a night full of surprises.

“This is unbelievable. The fact that this is a fan-voted award means so much to me,” Swift said in her acceptance speech. “I can’t believe it was a year ago that I announced the ‘Midnights’ album.”

The show, held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, was Swift’s from nearly the beginning. The night’s first presenters were none other than NSYNC, who reunited to hand the best pop video award to Swift.

In coordinating suits, Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez shared the stage with Swift. Bass handed her a friendship bracelet, just as fans do at the superstar’s shows. “You’re pop personified,” she told the group.

The night’s top nominee later returned to the stage to pick up the song of the year trophy for “Anti-Hero” and also the best direction award.

Swift took home nine of the 11 awards she was up for, including artist of the year in a category made up entirely of women nominees for the first time in VMA history.

Her “Karma (Remix)” collaborator, Ice Spice, won best new artist. “Oh my God, this is so cool,” she said. “I just want to thank my munchkins.”

New music was abundant throughout the show. Host Nicki Minaj performed her latest single, the dreamy “Last Time I Saw You” before jumping into a brand-new tease of a fiery new trap cut from her highly-anticipated “Pink Friday 2” album.

“I ain’t nothing like you,” she raps, “I’m on a whole other level.”

As much as Swift dominated, the VMAs centered on music’s global power. K-pop boy band Tomorrow X Together and Brazilian superstar Anitta premiered their new collaboration, the glossy retro-pop of “Back for More.”

Another K-pop group, Stray Kids, brought “S-Class” to the stage, regional Mexicana star Peso Pluma performed “Lady Gaga” and reggaetonera Karol G delivered “Oki Doki” and “Tá OK (remix),”

Comedian Tiffany Haddish presented the award for “Best Afrobeats” in the category’s inaugural year, given to Rema and Selena Gomez for their massive hit “Calm Down.”

“Africa in the house!” Rema started his acceptance speech. “Shout out to Fela (Kuti) who started Afrobeats in the first place…and I want to give a big shout out to the next generation of Afrobeats.”

Gomez stood a few feet from the microphone but jumped in when Rema asked her to, telling the crowd: “I want to send all of my love to Nigeria, thank you.”

Colombian icon Shakira received the Video Vanguard Award and performed an incredible bilingual medley of her decades of hits – “She Wolf,” her collaboration with Rauw Alejandro “Te Felicito,” the viral, record-breaking “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap among them – in a set introduced by her “Hips Don’t Lie” collaborator Wyclef Jean.

“MTV, thank you for being such a big part of my career since I was only 18 years old,” Shakira said, also thanking her parents and her children, who she brought to the show.

“This is for you my people, my Latin American people, inside and outside this country,” she said, switching to Spanish. “Thank you for inspiring me and for injecting me with so much strength and so much desire to move forward, I love you so much.”

She also took home the award for best collaboration for “TQG,” her song with Karol G. The duo gave their acceptance speech entirely in Spanish. “If collaborating with the legendary Shakira had been impressive, having an award with her is something from another planet,” Karol G exclaimed.

Diddy received the Global Icon Award from Mary J. Blige and his daughter Chance Combs. He is third recipient of the award, following the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2022 and the Foo Fighters in 2021.

The legendary rapper also performed at the VMAs for the first time since 2005. It was an incredible collection of some of his biggest hits like “Bad Boy for Life” and “Mo Money Mo Problems,” joined by some of his greatest collaborators: Yung Miami, Keyshia Cole, and sweetest of all, his son, King Combs.

“Love wins, y’all, love wins,” he started his speech. “I started out as a paper boy, I didn’t know I was going to be here.” He then led the audience with a chant of “bad boy.”

“This is for 30 years,” he continued. “I pray to God that you get to do what you love for 30 years.”

Lil Wayne opened the show with a performance of his new single “Kat Food.” Immediately afterward, Olivia Rodrigo brought her “Vampire” music video set to the stage, before launching into her cheeky pop-punk single “Get Him Back!”

Between the two tracks, snippets of her sold singles played aloud – at the same moment, she was rushed from the staged in a pre-planned “malfunction,” further mirroring the “Vampire” video and symbolizing a move from her first record to her second.

The live sets were many: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion brought “Bongos” to life with big choreography; Demi Lovato played a rock ‘n’ roll medley of her biggest hits: “Heart Attack,” into “Sorry Not Sorry,” “Cool for the Summer” before the best K-pop award was given to Stray Kids.

Later, Anitta would win the “best Latin” award for the second year in a row, delivering one of the more endearing acceptance speeches of the night – “I wanna thank myself,” she laughed. “Because I work so hard!”

French Montana used his position as best R&B presenter alongside Ashanti to draw attention to Morocco earthquake relief, spotlighting a relief fund that he said he would personally donate to. Montana grew up in Morocco.

Near the end of the show, the MTV Video Music Awards celebrated 50 years of hip-hop with a star-studded finale performance. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five started with “The Message,” which led to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “The Show.” Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, LL Cool J and DMC of Run-DMC closed it out – an energetic celebration of a multigenerational culture.

2023 MTV Video Music Awards: *NSYNC reunites 22 years after last studio album, presents Taylor Swift with award – ABC News

*NSYNC reunited at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards Tuesday night.

The five members of the iconic Grammy nominated boy band — Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick — took the VMAs stage together during the star-studded awards show.

The group took the stage to present the Video Music Award for Best Pop to Taylor Swift for her “Anti-Hero” music video.

“Y’all ready to give out the first award?” asked Timberlake to screaming fans after all members recounted VMA memories.

In receiving the award, Swift, who was starstruck by the group, called them “pop personified.”

“I’m not doing well pivoting from this to this,” she said as she held her Moonman statue with *NSYNC standing next to her. “Like I had your dolls… Like are you doing something? What’s gonna happen now? They’re gonna do something and I need to know what it is!”

“You guys are pop personified,” she continued. “So to receive this from your golden pop hands is really — it’s too much.”

Their appearance together marks 22 years since the release of their last studio album, “Celebrity,” which included hits like “Pop” and “Girlfriend.”

Timberlake, Bass, Fatone, Chasez and Kirkpatrick rose to fame together in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 1997 and included hits like “Tearin’ up My Heart,” “Here We Go” and “(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You.”

To support their first album, the group went on tour for 18 months where they performed in over 200 concerts across one hundred cities. Artists who joined them on tour at the time included Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Jordan Knight and The Sugarhill Gang.

Two years after releasing their 1998 holiday album “Home for Christmas,” *NSYNC released their third studio album, “No Strings Attached.” Their lead single, “Bye Bye Bye,” peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Their second single “It’s Gonna Be Me” and third single “This I Promise You” also reached the Billboard Hot 100.

The “No Strings Attached” tour followed after the album’s release. After embarking on the year-long tour across North America, the group headlined Super Bowl XXXV in January 2001 alongside Aerosmith, with featured appearances from Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, Nelly and more.

“Celebrity,” *NSYNC’s third and final album, was released six months later.

After the group’s PopOdyssey tour ended in 2002, the group went on hiatus. During this time, Timberlake released his solo album, “Justified.” Other members including Fatone, Bass and Chasez went on to pursue solo projects as well.

The group made an appearance together in 2005, but didn’t perform together again until 2013, when Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass took the VMAs stage with Timberlake for his Video Vanguard performance.

Chasez, Kirkpatrick, Fatone and Bass also performed together as NSYNC without Timberlake in 2019 for Ariana Grande’s headlining performance at Coachella. The group performed “Tearin’ Up My Heart” and Grande’s song, “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.”

In 2018, all members of the band came together to accept their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
